Ustadzah Al-Ikhlash Joins The 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023

In her presentation entitled TEACHING ENGLISH IN AN ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL: THE CASE OF AN INDONESIAN EFL TEACHER: ELT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Putri Harum, ustadzah and PP Al-Ikhlash alumni who are now tasked with studying at the Islamic University of Indonesia majoring in English Language Education, said that Islamic boarding schools are now trying to improve the non-religious competence of their students, one of which is English competence.

In the Conference which took place in Bangkok from January 27-28, 2023, Putri tried to explore strategies, methods, and approaches to teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at a Pesantren in Kuningan, West Java. Using descriptive qualitative methods he digs up information to get a clear picture of how the English teachers in the pesantren design, teach, and evaluate English lessons.

The results showed that the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method and several other techniques were used by these teachers.

At the end of her 30-minute presentation, Putri hopes that this study can provide a clear picture of how an English teacher teaches in a school with a different culture and characteristics from public schools. Thus, researchers can then have insight into the differences between English teaching in public schools and in islamic boarding schools.
